Leadership lessons from the boxing ring.

This interview really got me thinking about the roles we play
as leaders and the responsibility that comes with
being in positions to positively influence.
One thing really stood out for me that showed up at the end of this conversation: ➡️ leadership is not all about you ( as the leader). In fact, leadership is so much about others, and how we can get the most and best out of our teams, peers and employees!

Taking a page out of the boxing coach playbook, we can do this by:
1) knowing how to read a room and being able to see what others cannot see ( in boxing, coaches can do this from the corner of the ring - being a second pair of eyes from a very useful and purposeful distance).
2) meeting people where they are at and knowing who is
standing in front of you
( in boxing it's called studying our opponent).
In boxing we have a saying ➡️ "styles make fights".
As a coach, I am not going to try to change a fighter's natural style, strengths and tendencies to fit my way of coaching. I'm going to encourage the athlete's abilities to increase their confidence and leverage their potential to perform at their best, overall. And then when it comes to fight night and the stress is high and the tension is thick, I am going to model the mood that I want my fighter to feel, channel and embody when it matters the most.
The best inner work that any leader can continue to do,
is to understand where they exist
in time and space in relation to the people around them
and how their behavior and mood impacts others.
